Through the Kolam-masked unreliable narrator Maya, I explore my metaphorical past lives and the narratives that have shaped them. This is a solo presentation on view at PM/AM Gallery in London until July 1st.
To Bad, So Sad, Maybe Next Birth was a deadpan phrase my parents would say whenever something was out of my control and didn’t go according to plan. In a brutally casual way, it embodies the entire human struggle, like Sisyphus pushing the boulder up the hill. It feels like suffering and resilience on a scale that goes beyond one lifetime. If we are being reborn, we are living out a grand narrative of desiring, striving, stumbling, soaring, tumbling, grieving, learning, dying, and starting over, over and over again. Even in one life we can go through all of these experiences, which end up transforming us. The only connection to the previous versions of these identities exist in highly subjective stories, whether those are in history books, or personal narratives.
