This painting depicts the back of the mask with eye holes visible. Through the mask’s perspective, we look out to a Los Angeles landscape with an eerie red-orange sky that mimics the color palette of the blood orange and the familiar scene of the sky after a wildfire. The red sun also references the appearance of the blood orange while the glowing red sky echoes the glowing red wound of Maya’s belly after the accident. The back of the mask, with its eye holes, creates a sense of perspective that suggests looking out through a constructed identity or filtered vision, implicating both the viewer and the mask itself in the act of perceiving and interpreting.
